This collection contains a transcript, ca. 1843, of the annotated answers from an interview conducted by John D. Shane (1812-1864) with Joe F. Taylor (1767-1851) of Jessamine County, Kentucky. The interview details Taylor's post-Revolutionary War experiences after his family moved to Kentucky from Virginia in 1784. Specifically, Taylor tells of his initial journey to Kentucky, his attempts to settle, dealings with other pioneers, and hostile encounters with Indians. There is also information related to the Tanner family of Jessamine County. This collection also contains a newspaper clipping, 1847, about the descendants of Colonel Richard Taylor (1744-1829) of Virginia and Kentucky.

Joseph F. Taylor, youngest son of Lazarus and Hannah Bradford Taylor, was born 27 March 1767 in Fauquier County, Virginia. On 17 June 1784 he arrived in Lexington, Kentucky, after a two week trip in a pirogue with other pioneers. Taylor married Nancy Howard (1770-1850) of Woodford County, Kentucky, on 8 May 1790 in Woodford County, Kentucky. The couple reared seven children. John Dabney Shane, Presbyterian minister and collector of material on Presbyterian history and pioneer life in Kentucky and the Mississippi Valley, was born in 1812 in Cincinnati, Ohio and died there on February 7, 1864. He attended Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia, graduating in 1834. He also studied theology in the Union Theological Seminary in Virginia.
